The LEGO Group began in Ole Kirk Christiansen’s workshop in Billund, Denmark, in 1924. The name LEGO comes from the Danish words for “play well” and “godt,” which mean “truth.” Christiansen purchased a woodworking shop in Billund, where he built houses for farmers. He had a small staff of apprentices to help him out in his work. Unfortunately, his workshop burned down in 1924, after he set fire to a pile of wood shavings. However, the LEGO Group funded the research and continued to make the line.
